The Big Island Activities
Aloha! We have been going to the Big Island since 1981, and while many things have changed, Hawaii still has a very special place in our hearts and the prettiest sunsets ever!
This group organizes kayak trips out of Kealakekua Bay and takes you across to Captain Cook where you get out and snorkel around.
Take the early morning tour for less crowds.
When Christopher and his buddies did this a couple of years ago, they were accompanied across the bay by tons of dolphins!
Another way to enjoy Kealakekua bay, is a really good (challenging) hike
Definitely start early so it’s not as hot on your way back up.
Take water!
And wear your swimsuit under your shorts so you can take a swim in the bay
we even bring our masks and snorkels.
Night snorkel with the Manta Rays!
This is an absolute must- an experience you will never forget.
There are several tours that offer this, so do some research and read reviews to choose the best group for you.
Most boats leave out of Honokohau Harbor, just south of the airport.
Check out Alltrails app for hikes close to you.
A day trip to the Volcano can be a long day on a windy road
One option is to stop at the Green Sand Beach along the way.
Spend the night at the Volcano House then explore the Volcano Park the next day.
After going to Hawaii for 40 years, we finally went up to Mauna Kea for the sunset and star gazing tour this past Christmas. It was a very cool adventure and absolutely beautiful!
Try not to go during a full moon, which causes “light pollution”.
Bring layers to stay warm, although some tours provide coats and snow pants.
Prettiest beach up North
Be sure to check for big waves and high winds before you venture up there.
Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the day!
Our 2 other favorite beaches are:
need to hike in
Kua Bay
easier access with parking
our favorite is the one at Keauhou shopping center on Saturdays from 8-12 because it is close to the house.
*If you are flying in or out of Honolulu, or have an extra day to fly over to Oahu, do not miss a visit to Pearl Harbor!*
