Journey through Portugal

Porto

We were delayed by a day and were only able to stay one night, but we covered a lot during our quick visit!

Hotel:

Torel Palace Hotel

  • Great boutique hotel- We were so happy here!

Dinner:

Flow - Delicious dinner in a charming courtyard in a very cool area.

  • Find a local bar to listen to Fado, the local music.

The Douro Valley & Fàtima

Beautiful wine country! Many local Quintas to stop and taste. We took a long bike ride along the Douro River.

We stopped in Òbidos- A beautiful hilltop town.

  • Great to walk around and grab a coffee and stretch your legs.

Fàtima

  • This was a beautiful, spiritual stop to visit Our Lady of Fatima.

  • After 6:00pm mass, we stayed at this darling hotel 5 minutes away from the touristy area.

Luz Charming Houses

  • They made dinner for us and everyone who works there was so charming! The best surprise of our trip!

Nazarè

We stopped here on our drive from Fatima to Lisbon.

Lunch at A Tasquinha

  • We shared the local seafood pot with rice- it was delicious! It’s family owned and very popular. I would make a reservation or arrive at 12:30 when they open.

Dinner spots:

Cervejaria Ramiro

  • Fabulous shellfish restaurant with darling waiters- it’s the real deal! You can reserve online or wait in line.

Cantinho dl Avillez

  • Casual restaurant close to The Ivens. This is the little, casual sister to this famous Portuguese chef known for Encanto and Belcanto. Delicious, authentic food and very cool vibe.

Shops!

There is a lot of great shopping in Lisbon- these are just 2 small, unique shops I loved right down the street from The Ivens

A Vida Portugueses - everything Portuguese

Ceramicas na Linha - beautiful ceramics

Lisbon

The Ivens Hotel

  • Great location in the Chiado district with small, clean rooms.

  • Fabulous bar called Rocco.

  • Highly recommend a half day tour when you arrive to help get your bearings and some history!

We hired a driver to take us to Cascais (the beach) and Sintra (historical town/castles) for the day- you can also take the train. We loved both towns!!

Timeout Market

  • Perfect for lunch after lots of walking on our morning tour.

Side notes:

Definitely wear sneakers! So much walking up and down the hills. Uber is very easy and reasonable if you decide you’ve had enough walking.

Also check out sunset cruises- We did not do this, but Genevieve did, and said it was beautiful!

We walked up to the Castelo de San Jorge early one morning before it got too hot and too crowded to see the views and peacocks! On our way out, we enjoyed big cups of freshly cut fruit from a kiosk.

Be sure to go to Bèlèm to the famous pastry shop for the custard tarts.

And don’t forget to try the delicious cherry liquor, Ginjinha, served in little chocolate cups
